When Treye Trotman steps onto the wrestling mat, the rest of the world disappears.

His proudest achievements – consecutive top titles at Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships and gold medals at the U SPORTS national championships – are proof of his burgeoning career as a student-athlete.

Though Treye is undefeated during the two years he has spent as a wrestler for the Mustangs, the long list of accolades doesn’t enter his mind when he approaches a new challenge. Treye understands that each match has no predetermined outcome.

“Our coaches always tell us, ‘You may lose this match, but your next one could be the best you’ve ever had.’ To me, one competition has no effect on another. I try to imagine that there is nothing to win or lose,” says Treye.

It’s an interesting approach, and one that has made all the difference as Treye continues to add titles to his list of accomplishments. Most recently, Treye was named the Most Valuable Player across varsity athletics at Western.

A finance student at King’s University College at Western, the hard work and focus have clearly paid off. “With the right mindset, you can do anything,” he says.

A unique bond through sport

Born in London, Treye’s father nurtured the talents of his sons. They began exploring martial arts, boxing and jiu-jitsu – disciplines that teach crucial skills including trust and respect. From the beginning however, there was no pressure. “It was always my choice to pursue athletics. My dad would provide guidance and was my best role model. Without him, I wouldn’t have these goals or opportunities.”

When Treye began wrestling in high school and was given the opportunity to attend practices with the Mustangs, he realized his potential to continue with the sport through university. “The team was one of the main reasons why I chose Western,” he recalls.

Treye says that while wrestling may seem like a solitary sport, it’s the camaraderie and supportive atmosphere that he loves most. His coaches recognizing his technical and tactical skills, Treye’s positive personality has made him an asset to Western wrestling.

“We cheer each other on and push each other during practice. Those friendships are on a different level - it’s a unique bond,” says Treye.

Treye Trotman is presented with the Most Valuable Player award across Mustangs Athletics for the 2023-24 season.

Donors fuel dreams

The team spirit extends to Western’s faithful donor community. Understanding the many priorities student-athletes face, donors provide Treye and his teammates motivation and encouragement through their financial support.

Right now, there’s an opportunity to support student-athletes like Treye through this year’s campaign for Mustangs Athletics. A gift to your preferred sport can help ensure every Mustang has the resources to excel athletically and academically.

“Donors understand the financial pressures and stress that come with varsity athletics. To have them in our corner is vital.”

“Donors have helped me with what’s important in my life and have removed barriers.” In fact, Treye wouldn’t have made it to the U SPORTS national championship in Alberta last year, where he won gold, without donors who helped fund the team’s travel expenses.

“Many donors are former student-athletes, so they’ve been in our position. They understand the financial pressures that come with varsity athletics. To have them in our corner is vital,” states Treye.

Between wrestling, school and working a part time job, the inspiring student has little leisure time. But rather than feeling overwhelmed by the weight of those priorities, wrestling is a therapeutic outlet which enables him to clear his head.

“Wrestling is an escape for me. It gives me focus and allows me to do my best in all aspects of life.
