Western University Be Extraordinary The Campaign For Western

Looking ahead, remembering the past

January 2, 2018

Linda Hasenfratz, BSc’89, MBA’97, combined a passion for science with a world-class business education to achieve amazing results. As CEO of Linamar Corporation, she wanted to ensure other women could do the same.

So, Linamar, and the Hasenfratz and Newton families, invested $5 million to create the Linamar Scholarships for Women in Engineering and Business.

The scholarships support up to 10 female students per year in the Western Engineering and Ivey Business School dual-degree program, offering recipients tuition support, co-op placements and an offer of full-time employment.

Linda’s forward-thinking investment enables Western to support its best female students today, so they can become the engineering and business leaders of tomorrow. You will see this generous gift featured in this issue of Impact Western and many more.

For example, Kate Taylor, BFA’87, started the Kate and Robert Taylor Scholarship in Visual Arts to support budding artists to build successful careers by helping them learn more about marketing their work.

You’ll learn how a $1-million gift from TD Bank Group to the Faculty of Science will help teachers and researchers translate raw data (more of which was created in 2017 than in the past 5,000 years combined) into
solutions to some of the world’s most  pressing problems.

You’ll meet Robert Luton, a family medicine physician who’s donated a 1685 edition of Shakespeare’s Fourth Folio to Western Libraries’ Archive. The treasured collection of plays is an incredible addition to the rare books collection and of huge importance to students and researchers alike.

And you’ll get a glimpse into Canada’s past through the Labatt Brewing Company’s gift-in-kind donation of their corporate archives — one of the top three corporate archival collections in the world.

This extraordinary generosity is a big part of what helps Western maintain and strengthen its reputation as a world-class institution. Thank you for your continued support.
