Schulich Medicine & Dentistry strives to bring the School’s vision of becoming a global leader in optimizing life-long health through innovations in research, education and active engagement with our communities to life. Our vision is broad – inclusive of development, health and illness throughout the life span. The Schulich Excellence Fund is an unrestricted fund that addresses immediate priorities and responds to emerging opportunities across the School. We rely on community support to help build this fund so that we can provide the best possible experience for our medical and dental students, while supporting our researchers, scientists and clinicians.
The Schulich Excellence Fund is critical in:
Providing scholarships, bursaries, research awards, lecture series and hosting symposia
Supporting our researchers, scientists and clinicians through equipment needs, facilities development, professorships and fellowships.
Enhancing our ability to capitalize on government funding opportunities that require us to fulfill a certain financial commitment before receiving matching funds.
Providing the flexibility to adapt and respond to opportunities as they arise.
Your gift to The Schulich Excellence Fund will help ensure we maintain our leadership position in the training of the next generation of physicians, dentists and health researchers and achieve our vision of leading advancements in lifelong health.
Student Support – Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries
Financial support for our students means that the best and brightest can have access to medical and dental education, no matter their financial situation. Scholarships, awards and bursaries can give a student much more than money. They can relieve financial stress, inspire and motivate, and provide new opportunities. Your support can change student experiences and futures, and is a special way for you to make a direct impact on a student's life.
You can create your own named scholarship, bursary or award or contribute to the student support through the Schulich Excellence Fund, which allows the School to serve the areas of the highest priority, including providing need-based and merit scholarships for deserving students.
At Robarts Research Institute, we understand the value of time, especially when you or someone you love is affected by a debilitating disease. That is why we’ve made it our mission to accelerate medical discovery.
Our research philosophy is to bring medical discoveries and new technologies to clinical trial, market and, ultimately, to patients – faster. One way we do this is by taking an interdisciplinary approach to research. We have physicians, physicists, biologists and engineers all working under one roof, with collaborations extending to 20 countries worldwide. This approach is unique in Canada, and so are our results.
With your investment in the ground-breaking research at Robarts Research Institute, we can better understand cancer, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and provide more accurate diagnosis and precise treatments.
We are working hard to find the answers to life’s health challenges, but we can’t do it alone. We need your help to change lives.
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry has set-up a COVID-19 Response Fund to support the most urgent needs of students, residents, physicians and researchers during the pandemic.
Whether it’s health and wellness support for those on the frontlines, vital financial assistance for students or research to better understand and fight the pandemic, your gift will have a profound impact. This is a challenging time and we are inspired by our alumni and community’s desire to help.
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry joins other medical schools across the country in recognizing it must become more proactive in recruiting Indigenous students and training Indigenous doctors and dentists. Only 0.1 per cent of physicians in Canada are Indigenous – the ratio of Indigenous physicians to the Indigenous population is 1:33,000, compared to 1:515 for the general population. These are startling numbers.
It is a common misconception that all Indigenous students get free education. Canada’s Indigenous population is one of the youngest and fastest growing in the country, with nearly 310,000 youth between the ages of 15-25. Government funding provides support for approximately 23,000 Canadian Indigenous students spread across all disciplines in postsecondary education. This is simply not enough support. In the last three years alone, Western’s Tribal Council turned away close to 550 Indigenous students across all faculties due to lack of government funding.
The Schulich Indigenous Scholarship Fund will create new endowed scholarships with the goal of covering the full cost of tuition for four Indigenous undergraduate medical or dental students, one student in each year of the four-year program.
Today, we are seeking your financial support to help respond to this critical and time sensitive need. We must – and can – do better and the time is now.
