Western University Be Extraordinary The Campaign For Western

Uncovering the extraordinary

June 27, 2017

In 2006, geologist Keith Barron, PhD’97, made an amazing discovery. He, along with a team of modern-day treasure hunters, uncovered Ecuador’s largest known gold deposit to date.

A few years later, he gave more than $1 million to Western to establish a chair in economic geology. His goal was to strengthen the field of study and position Western as the premier institution in Canada where students can study to become professional geoscientists – and follow in his world-travelled footsteps.

Keith's fascinating story and legacy of support are featured in this issue of Impact Western.

You will also read about other Western alumni and friends who are uncovering the extraordinary in their own lives, and giving back to set the next generation up for success.

Like Jerome Reid, BEd’17, a recent graduate from the teacher education program at Western’s Faculty of Education, who seized an international learning opportunity to teach English to underprivileged students in Nicaragua. It’s a story he’s grateful to share, and one that was only made possible with generous donor support of the Global Opportunities Awards program.

Or Larry Rosen, LLB/MBA’82, and Susan Jackson, LLB’83, who donated $100,000 to the Faculty of Law because they care so deeply about the future of business law in Canada.

Or Bob Boyda, BA’79, who’s been supporting the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts & Humanities (SASAH) since its launch in 2013, because he believes in the intrinsic value of a liberal arts degree and the unique skills and abilities SASAH graduates bring to the workforce.

All of these contributions set Western students, alumni and researchers up for success.

As we head into our final year of the Be Extraordinary campaign, we are well positioned — thanks to you — to achieve our goal of $750 million. Thank you for consistently championing and supporting Western and our ambitious goals.
