When I consider Alice Munro and her literary career, I am proud Western offered a creative home where a young writer from small-town Ontario would launch her life’s passion.

Since publishing her first fiction as a student at Western, Ms. Munro, DLitt’76, has created memorable stories, achieved artistic greatness and received worldwide praise – the latest accolade being her Nobel Prize in Literature.

Ms. Munro represents the best of Western – a learning community that inspires students and scholars to lead, to create and to achieve.

In many ways, Ms. Munro and other extraordinary alumni exemplify our newly unveiled strategic plan – Achieving Excellence on the World Stage. For our entire University community, the plan’s major themes rally us to scale new heights: “Raise our expectations. Lead in learning. Reach beyond campus. Take charge of our destiny.” It is a call to act boldly.

As we strive to achieve our vision for Western, we know our goals represent a shared ambition. I say ‘shared’ because you – alumni, donors and friends – play a vital role in reaching our aspirations. Through your involvement with Western, we will achieve greater success on the national and world stage.

In my short time as Western’s Vice-President, External, I have witnessed the incredible impact of your gifts. You are building opportunities for curious and creative minds to better society, grapple with pressing questions and discover solutions to the world’s challenges.

You are also investing in many students who are benefiting from The Western Experience, just as much today as Ms. Munro did in her day.

Thank you for sharing our ambition to offer a culture of creativity and leadership on campus. We are grateful to have your support.
