Western proudly welcomed two of Canada’s 2015 Schulich Leader Scholarship recipients to campus in September. Kyra Moura, who is studying medical sciences, and Dane Sisinni, who is enrolled in engineering, were among the group of 50 recipients chosen from a record-breaking 1,250 high schools that submitted a nominee this year.

The Schulich Leader Scholarships program, created by Canadian business leader and philanthropist Seymour Schulich, encourages high school graduates to embrace future careers in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Launched in 2011, this $100-million scholarship fund provides 50 undergraduate scholarships each year to students pursuing post-secondary education at a top Canadian university. Twenty-five scholarships, valued at $80,000 each, are designated for students pursuing an engineering degree, and the other 25, valued at $60,000 each, are designated for students studying science, technology or math. Two scholarship recipients are selected at each of 20 participating universities. To date, Western has been home to eight Schulich Leader Scholarship recipients. Since the program launched, scholarships have been awarded to 170 students across Canada, distributing more than $11 million.

“Fostering leadership in STEM fields is vital to Canada’s economic prosperity,” Mr. Schulich said. “It is immensely important to invest in the next generation of technology innovators as they develop and hone their minds and skills to contribute to our national and global community.”

Western is home to the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, named in recognition of Mr. Schulich in 2004.
