Western University Be Extraordinary The Campaign For Western

Celebrating the Western spirit

Celebrating the Western spirit
Dr. Amit Chakma

In my role as president, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to meet many extraordinary Western alumni, donors, faculty, students, staff and friends. Their generosity and commitment are a constant source of pride and inspiration.

As I read the stories in this issue of Impact Western, my belief in the dedication of our Western family is reinforced. Alumni continuing the cycle of support and ‘paying it forward’ are themes found not only on these pages, but in our exceptional community as a whole.

You will meet alumni such as Dr. Vladimir Yakovishin, MD’68, whose bequest will support student bursaries and research in ophthalmology, and Abudi Awaysheh, BSc’06, MSc’10, who recently established an award in honour of his mentor. Both of these remarkable donors were recipients of financial support during their time as students and are determined to help others achieve their goals.

You will also meet students like Tiffany Kralka, Helen Ngo and Kyle Fricke. Each of them is on a very different path to success made possible by the generosity of a Western graduate. What they share, however, is a gratitude to the donors whose support helped make their dreams possible and a commitment to carry on the tradition of philanthropy as they move forward in their lives.

As a supporter of Western, you, too, are an invaluable part of this philanthropic tradition. We could not give our students the bright futures they deserve if it wasn’t for you.

As we prepare to say goodbye to another year and look forward to the festive season, I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday. Thank you for your generosity and for continuing to be part of the Western family.
