Western University Be Extraordinary The Campaign For Western

New award for women Mustang swimmers

by Karmen Dowling | September 24, 2008

Joan Hamilton (BA’39) has donated $25,000 to establish the Joan Hamilton Swimming Award Fund, held at Foundation Western.

The fund will support an annual award worth $1,125. Recipients will be full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are members of the Women’s Mustang Swimming team.

“There may be some students with a lot of academic ability who don’t have the money to go to university – and I’d like to help them,” says Hamilton. She adds that she wanted to support an award that recognized athletes who are involved in a sport that she loves so much.

Hamilton, 91, first arrived at Western after receiving a Latin scholarship. In addition to studying business, Hamilton was involved with the basketball, soccer, tennis and swimming teams.
