Hong Kong alumni support encourages international student Ada Tang to achieve

Ada Tang expects to graduate with an Honors Specialization in Biochemistry and a Minor in Chemistry, with an ultimate goal of a career in pharmacy. Ada was able to come to Western to fulfill her dreams with the help of the 125th Anniversary Hong Kong Student Scholarship.

“Being an international student, I have to pay a higher amount of tuition,” says Ada. “The scholarship helps to reduce some of the tuition fees and has encouraged me and given me confidence to achieve more in my studies.”

This scholarship was made possible by donors affiliated with The University of Western Ontario Alumni Association Hong Kong Branch through Foundation Western. To date five Western students have received this award. Recipients are high-achieving international students who are permanent residents of Hong Kong entering their first year of a fulltime undergraduate degree program at Western. The scholarships are worth $3,000 each year and continue for up to four years provided recipients enter a four-year degree program in second year and maintain full-time status with a minimum 80 per cent average.

Ada says she has a real appreciation for how certain individuals and groups try to inspire students in their learning. Being a scholarship recipient, she adds, has broadened her horizons and allowed her to meet new friends from different backgrounds. Ada has been very active in the Chinese Debating and Public Speaking Association, the UWO Choir Club and Perth Hall Environmental Committee, as well as a few others.

“Scholarships provide opportunities international students wouldn’t otherwise have,” says Ada. “Rewarding excellent studies also creates an incentive to work hard and achieve more in the future. I know it has for me. And I am so thankful that I will be able to achieve my dream – I am looking forward to contributing to society through the pharmaceutical industry.”
