Foundation Western was established in 1979 as a joint venture between Western's Alumni Association and Board of Governors. At that time, the total University endowed funds stood at about $10 million and annual alumni support for the University amounted to less than $100,000. The Foundation’s primary purpose was to raise funds for the University and to build a culture of giving among Western alumni. It succeeded.
Over the next 35 years, the Foundation’s assets grew to over $200 million. During that time more than 75,000 donors contributed to approximately 1,120 endowment funds helping Western deliver an academic experience second to none.
Thanks to the generosity of Western’s alumni, the Foundation has granted more than $90 million to support student aid, program enrichment and learning tools at Western. We are proud of this record of success and we want to thank all of the donors, volunteers and staff who contributed over the years.
In honour of the Alumni Association’s role in the development of the Foundation and the extraordinary impact the Foundation has had on the Western community, the Foundation Western Legacy Fund has been created. The Alumni Association will recommend grants from this endowment each year consistent with granting guidelines formerly used by the Foundation’s Board of Directors. In this way, the Foundation’s spirit will live on in a real and tangible way for generations to come.
