Christine Magee (HBA’82) took a risk when she co-founded a chain of mattress specialty stores in 1994. Sleep Country Canada is now the country’s largest mattress retailer with more than 245 stores nationwide. Today, Christine is mentoring the next generation of young entrepreneurs. And her business acumen was fostered at Western.

Biography

Christine Magee, HBA’82, is the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of Sleep Country Canada. She co-founded the Company in 1994. From 1982 to 1994 Christine worked in the Banking and Financial Services industry at the National Bank of Canada and Continental Bank of Canada. Active board appointments include Metro Inc., Woodbine Entertainment Group, Trillium Health Partners, Mentoring Council of the Province of Ontario Innovation Fund, and Advisory Council of the Talent Fund. Christine has also taken on an active mentoring role for Women’s Executive Network. Past board and committee memberships include the Advisory Board of the Ivey School of Business (2010-2017); Covenant House Toronto, Selection and Strategy Committee (2015-2017); the Major Gifts Campaign Chair for the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation’s Vital Links Campaign (2001-2005); Honourary Chair of the Learning Partnership (2002); member of the Honourary Council of the Labour of Love Campaign at the Rouge Valley System Foundation (2006-2008); Cabinet Member for the United Way of Greater Toronto (2001-2002); Account Executive-Retail Division on the United Way Campaign (2006); member of the Board of Cott Corporation (2004-2008) and McDonald’s Canada (1999-2004).

Other recognition and awards include Excellence Canada Special Recognition of Achievement Award on November 9, 2017; appointment to the Order of Canada on July 1, 2015; induction into the Women’s Executive Network Canada’s Top 100™ Most Powerful Women Hall of Fame on December 4, 2013; Women’s Executive Network Canada’s Top 100™ Most Powerful Women, 2007, 2010, 2011, Possibility Thinker Award, 2012, Communication and Leadership Award from Toastmasters International in 2010;Honorary Doctorate of Commerce from Ryerson University in 2006; the CIRAS Henry Singer Award for Exceptional Leadership in Retailing and Services from the University of Alberta School of Business in 2006; the Wilfrid Laurier University Outstanding Business Leader Award in 2005; a Marketing Hall of Legends Award in 2005; and the Retail Council of Canada Hall of Fame in 2005. Christine was also named Ontario Entrepreneur of the Year, Retail/Wholesale by Ernst & Young in 1998 and recognized as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in 1997.
